Designing Accessible Kiosks

Self-service kiosks are everywhere: museums, airports, restaurants, hospitals. Most of them shut out visitors with disabilities. Touchscreens with no speech output, no tactile keypad, no headphone jack, controls mounted out of reach. We help you build kiosks everyone can actually use, or fix the ones you already have.

Service offering details

  1. Kiosk accessibility assessment: we review your existing kiosks, hardware and software, against the standards that apply to self-service terminals (Section 508, ADA, EN 301 549, and the European Accessibility Act). You get a prioritized list of barriers and practical fixes.
  2. Screen reader configuration: we set up and tune the kiosk screen reader (including JAWS kiosk mode) for public use. Speech stays concise and private, delivered through a headset, never a loudspeaker.
  3. Accessible kiosk UX guidance: simple task flows, touchscreen layouts that work with speech output, tactile keypads, headphone jacks, and private input for PINs and personal data.
  4. Procurement support: accessibility requirements for your RFP and the questions to ask kiosk vendors before you sign anything. It is far cheaper to buy an accessible kiosk than to retrofit one.
  5. Staff training: your team learns to support kiosk users with disabilities and to keep the kiosks accessible after launch, including what to check when software updates break things.
