Today is the birthday of Louis Braille, and in 2024 we also remembered that it has been 200 years that he invented the writing system that we call braille today. I was always interested in his life, what did it look like in practice, where did he live, what were the objects he used. Just recently I got an interesting request from Caroline Karbowski, the founder of See3D if I would be interested in creating a 3D model of the house where Louis Braile grew up. There was only one thing I could say: how come I never thought about it before?

So, let’s fix it. I talked with my designer, and in a couple of days I was happily sending out the first version to my 3D printer. Soon after that he also sent me a model of the National Institute for Blind Youth, where Louis Braille was educated and invented his writing system.

Another building that is related to his life is the Pantheon in Paris, where today is his final resting place, as originally he wasn’t buried there. In connection with the Olympics, I already had the Pantheon, so now I have a short story of his life in 3D buildings, which are now available in the store.

Braille's home, Institute for Blind Youth and the Pantheon in 3D buildings

I have to say, Braille’s home is not necessarily a very interesting building, it has more of a sentimental value for me, though we tried to make it more interesting by representing the hill it is built on. But the school where he learned is absolutely elaborate, it is a very tactile building.

To remember Louis Braille’s birthday and the contribution he made to our lives, I created a bundle, where instead of the $75 that it costs to buy the buildings individually, I will make it available for $55. The price is the cost of making it and ship it anywhere in the United States.

However, if you have a 3D printer and you would like to print it for yourself, contact me and I will be happy to send you the files free of charge.
