In the following I would like to give you a little sneakpeek into my 3d buildings newsletter, which I have separated from the regular EvenGrounds newsletter because I found it has a different target audience. This newsletter comes out approximately every other week on Sunday, but it really depends if I have new buildings to show.
Below is the March, 2025 newsletter, if you like it, you can sign up for the upcoming ones at the bottom of this post.
Dear Reader
Let’s talk about parliaments. In many countries the parliament fulfills approximately the same functionality that the Capitol or a state capitol does in the United States.
I was always fascinated by parliament buildings, recently I visited the Hungarian Parliament where they had a huge model to touch. Hint, hint, it is coming to the store one day.
But today, let’s start with the parliament of Iceland. I always wanted to have this model, and it has a personal connection. In 2018 we have visited Iceland with the family and I wanted to go to the parliament. I heard that it was a relatively simple building. I was curious, what kind of a parliament does such a small country have. We put it into Google Maps, and got there. But according to the family there wasn’t anything like the parliament. It took us a few minutes to realize that they were actually looking at it. But it is not all that simple actually, because there is a mostly cube shaped building, though the roof is interesting, but what makes it unique is an attached smaller building which is almost round shaped and feels like a dome. It is not like anything I have touched. I actually found this building very interesting.
But I have two more parliaments for you. Recently a friend asked me to make the new parliament building of New Delhi which was constructed recently. I will be honest with you, I did not find that building that interesting by touch, but I got some feedback from several sighted people that they liked it. It is not the building itself I like but the fact that now I better understand what another parliament feels like. So this building was made at a scale of 1:1200.
My friend asked me if I could also create the old parliament. Of course, we will get it done sooner or later. I have about 50 buildings on the todo list which are already screened and they will be made hopefully in the next year or so.
Anyway, when I was researching the old parliament, I wanted to make it at the same scale. But what I was reading is that the new parliament has an approximately four times larger working area. I was a little concerned about it because I thought the old parliament would be very small. But just for the sake of comparison, I wanted to have it at the same scale anyway. But the surprise came when I held the old parliament in my hands, it was approximately the same size as the new parliament. The reason is that it is more of a circular building, with courtyards in the middle. So while it takes up about the same space as the new one, it has much less living area, so ultimately we didn’t have to make it at a different scale, because it just makes sense as is.
These are the stories for today, and I’m already preparing the new ones for you, almost about parliaments, actually I’ll have something about state capitols, but not for at least two weeks, because I will be speaking at a conference next week, and as always, I have to have the hotel’s model where I will be staying. We even created a tactile floor plan but that’s for another story.
If you would like any of the parliaments, they are available in the stores.
